Canada’s universities condemn the recent coup attempt and offer their full support to a democratic Turkey, one that recognizes the importance of the rule of law. However, we also wish to express our growing concern about some of the measures that have been implemented during the extended state of emergency declared by the government.
We are particularly troubled by the news that thousands of academics have been suspended from their positions and are being prevented from travelling, with some even being subjected to retaliation or intimidation. These actions are contrary to the academic values recognized and shared by OECD member countries.
Canada’s university leaders wish to reiterate that they view freedom of expression and academic freedom as core values of academia and of any democratic society. Respect for all democratic freedoms, including the free circulation of ideas and individuals, is at the heart of the values students and academics are committed to defending.
We call on Turkish authorities to protect the rights of all individuals, including those presumed to be responsible for the coup attempt.
