Funded by the International Doctoral Research Centre (IDRC), the International Doctoral Research Awards (IDRA) aim to strengthen the research capacity of doctoral students enrolled at Canadian universities. The IDRA program supports field research undertaken in the Global South.
IDRC has helped doctoral students perform field research since 1982. Universities Canada has administered the IDRA program since 2022.

Eligible applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or a citizen of a country defined as Official Development Assistance eligible by the OECD Development Assistance Committee in Africa, the Middle East, Asia or Latin American and the Caribbean. Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian university pursuing their first PhD.
The IDRA supports expenses for field research performed in the Global South. Applicants must use the research findings in their doctoral dissertation or thesis. The IDRA cannot be used to pay tuition fees.
