OTTAWA—Earlier this week university leaders, students, policymakers, parliamentarians and business leaders gathered in Ottawa, in advance of the federal budget, to exchange ideas on securing a prosperous future for Canada.

As part of the second annual Accelerate event, participants explored the major challenges and opportunities facing Canada, including the threat of disinformation, turbulent global politics, Canada’s critical talent shortage and climate change.

The important role of universities in teaching the next generation and developing innovative solutions to global challenges was underscored, as was the importance of working collaboratively across sectors and with all levels of government to achieve lasting results for the benefit of Canadians.

Guest speakers included:

  • David L. Cohen, United States Ambassador to Canada
  • Teresa Marques, President and CEO at Rideau Hall Foundation
  • Rosemary Thompson, Executive Director at Coalition for a Better Future
  • Marie-Pierre Ippersiel, Co-Chair of Canada’s Net-Zero Advisory Body and President and CEO of PRIMA Québec
  • Matthew Holmes, Senior Vice President at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce
  • Senator Peter Harder, Senate of Canada

Guests noted the significant investments in research being made by global competitors and underscored the importance of inclusive approaches to boosting labour market participation and the role universities play in building healthy communities.

“When it comes to finding innovative solutions to Canada’s most pressing issues—such as the talent crisis and climate change—universities are there to lead the way,” said Paul Davidson, president of Universities Canada. “And now, after gathering with thought-leaders, graduate students and experts across sectors, universities are better placed than ever to work together and build a better future for Canada.”
