Federal research investments support the universities that train Canada’s future doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs and researchers. They also help generate the knowledge and talent needed to drive innovation across key sectors, from energy and agriculture to manufacturing, health, arts and culture.

During an appearance before the Standing Committee on Science and Research on December 3, 2024, Universities Canada emphasized how research excellence must be central to any plan to create jobs, strengthen productivity and improve quality of life for Canadians.

Universities Canada made three recommendations:

  1. Build on the core principles of Canada’s research system.
  2. Expand research opportunities across institutions, regions and communities.
  3. Support French-language research and remove systemic barriers to participation.

Universities are essential partners in building a more prosperous, innovative and inclusive Canada. With sustained federal research and graduate scholarship funding, Canada can better support students, strengthen discovery and ensure more communities contribute to the country future.
