OTTAWA – Universities Canada today welcomed Capilano University to its membership, effective immediately. During its fall membership meeting, Universities Canada’s members approved Capilano University’s application, making it the 96th member of the national association.

“It’s with great pleasure that we welcome Capilano University to our association,” said Paul Davidson, president of Universities Canada. “We look forward to working with Capilano’s leadership, faculty, staff and students to advance higher education, and continue to help accelerate Canada’s COVID-19 recovery.”

“We are pleased and proud to join our colleagues across the country as a member of Universities Canada,” said Paul Dangerfield, president of Capilano University. “As an innovative, growing university on the west coast, we look forward to the engagement, collaboration and learning opportunities offered by belonging to this exceptional Canadian university community.”

Named after Chief Joe Capilano, an important leader of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) Nation of the Coast Salish people, the university was founded by the school boards and residents of North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Howe Sound through a referendum in 1968. Capilano University enrols approximately 12,700 students each year, including some 2,500 international students.

Its main campus is in North Vancouver, with the Sunshine Coast campus located in Sechelt and Capilano University Lonsdale, an extension of the main campus, operating in the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood of North Vancouver.

Universities Canada is not a national accreditation body. Membership in the association requires universities to meet strict criteria and adhere to set principles of institutional quality assurance that must be reaffirmed every five years. This reinforces the recognition of a Canadian university degree around the world as a high-quality academic achievement.
