Anne Carson awarded Nobel Prize for bold and inventive contributions to literature

OTTAWA — Universities Canada congratulates Canadian poet and University of Toronto alumna Anne Carson on receiving the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy recognized her “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.” 

This honour recognizes an extraordinary contribution to literature and highlights the international reach of Canadian scholarship and creativity. Carson’s achievement reflects the enduring value of the humanities, deepening our understanding of human experience and opening new possibilities for artistic expression.

Born in Toronto, Carson earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Toronto in 1974, her master’s degree in 1975 and her PhD in 1981. She later taught classes of McGill University and at universities in the United States. Her acclaimed works includes “Autobiography of Red” and “The Beauty of the Husband”. Her honours include the Griffin Poetry Prize and the T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry.
