Dear members,

Today is my first as president and CEO of Universities Canada and I could not be more excited to get down to work. I appreciate the warm welcome I have received so far, and Iook forward to meeting and getting to know all of you.

Universities have improved and enriched my life in many ways, beginning on the day my parents drove their Dodge caravan down highway 401 and moved me into Victoria Hall residence, room 514B at Queen’s University. Three decades later, I am honoured to be helping universities make life better for millions of others as well.

There is no denying the challenges currently facing our sector, or the need for strong, national leadership to address them.  Your institutions are essential to Canada, and no objective is more important than to protect, support and strengthen them.

During the coming months I will be seeking out every opportunity to listen, learn and deepen my understanding of our membership and your needs. Advocating for our community in Ottawa and preparing for a fast-approaching federal election, will also be top priorities. At the same time, I will be working closely with our staff to ensure they have the support, direction and resources they require.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming gathering in Quebec City, which will be a great opportunity to deepen relationships, address pressing issues and strategize for the future. You can also expect to receive more detailed updates from me before then, so please stay tuned. In the meantime, if you have comments or questions, or require anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Gabe
