Key facilities

Members of the GeoEngineering Centre – drawn from four different engineering departments at Queen’s and RMC – are dedicated to innovation in geotechnical, geohydrological, geochemical, geomechanical and geosynthetics engineering.

The Beaty Water Research Centre is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on water governance, sustainability, and protection of water resources.

Queen’s University Biological Station, encompassing 3400 hectares of land within the Frontenac Arch (a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve), is one of the premier scientific field stations in Canada for leading-edge research and education in ecology, evolution, conservation, geography, and environmental science.

Major collaborations

Renewable Energy and Reconciliation: Dr. Heather Castleden received $2M from CIHR to lead an interdisciplinary research program on Indigenous leadership in renewable energy development.

Queen’s researchers, led by Dr. Pascale Champagne, are completing an NSERC Strategic Project on research related to bio-oil recovery and CO2 recycling by waste stream enhanced microalga growth and low energy CO2 related extraction.

Buried Infrastructure: An NSERC Strategic Project, led by Dr. Ian Moore, is focused on investigating (a) the remaining strength of buried deteriorated cast iron and corrugated steel pipes after they are damaged by corrosion, (b) the impact of soil erosion due to water flow adjacent to pipes, (c) novel methods of identifying, monitoring and assessing these structures, and (d) the short and long term performance of repair techniques.


Dr. R. Kerry Rowe, CRC in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, develops new guidelines and techniques for building waste-disposal sites that provide long-term environmental protection.

Dr. Tucker Carrington, CRC in Computational Chemical Dynamics, develops new theories and methods to study the motion of molecules and chemical reactions.

Dr. Ian Moore, CRC in Infrastructure Engineering, investigates the behaviour and design of new and old buried pipe systems for city, transportation and resource industry applications.

Dr. Pascale Champagne, CRC in Bioresources Engineering, develops alternate water and waste management strategies and environmentally sustainable approaches with a focus on integrated bioresource management.

Dr. Mark Green, Civil Engineering, studies structural performance of concrete structures, including applications of fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs), the effects of cold or fire, and monitoring.

Special programs and work integrated learning initiatives

  • Collaborative Master’s Program in Applied Sustainability (CMAS) the objective of the program is to expose students to the implementation of sustainable engineering solutions within the context of broader sustainability theory.
  • The Queen’s Undergraduate Internship Program (QUIP) provides students with a 12-16 month work experience.
