Equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives at Canadian universities
Ryerson workshop yields recommendations for implementing EDI in STEM
Stakeholders from academia, government, the private and not-for-profit sectors came together at Ryerson University in May 2017 to propose solutions for increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and advancing innovation in Ontario.
The resulting report details twelve findings emerging from the roundtable discussion. Recommendations include increasing EDI awareness and training for STEM educators, embedding EDI in STEM programming and experiential learning opportunities, and building EDI awareness in hiring practices. Key next steps were identified, from seeking out best practices to rethinking what is valued as scientific knowledge.
Above all, the discussion highlighted the importance of EDI for innovation and economic prosperity in Canada.
