Assistant Director – Member Relations

We are currently recruiting an assistant director who will be responsible for the daily operations of the member relations group, including member communications and services, the development of workshops and events to support leadership development of members or advocacy goals, and two annual membership meetings.

As the assistant director, member relations, you will work with the vice-president and the director of information management and governance, to oversee the development of policies on issues relevant to higher education and associated workplans.  You will support member surveys on important issues and the communication of the results. You will provide planning and implementation, leadership and oversight of logistics and delivery of all member-related workshops and events, as required, to special working groups of members.

Education and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in communication, government relations or related discipline.
  • Five years of relevant experience.
  • Prior experience working in events planning and member relations.
  • Experience working in a university, national association and/or membership organization is an asset. 

Knowledge

  • Excellent knowledge of the Canadian university sector
  • Understanding of higher education, research and innovation issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of current federal political and policy environment, including parliamentary procedures. 

Abilities/Qualities

  • Tenacious and can easily translate ideas and strategies into concrete plans and action to achieve desired outcomes.
  • A capacity to work at the senior levels of the university sector, governments, international partners and other pertinent groups.
  • Superior ability to plan, analyze trends and forecast activities.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy, sound judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to gather strategic intelligence, and to develop and maintain information sources in government and universities.
  • Bilingualism a strong asset including excellent English writing skills.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent project management, organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure while balancing competing priorities.
  • High degree of discretion and insight.

The position is based in Ottawa. Universities Canada has adopted a hybrid work model where employees are expected to work in the office a minimum of three (3) out of ten (10) days.

The hiring salary range for this position is from $92,868 to $113,183 depending on experience.  Candidates who do not meet all of the position requirements may be considered in an underfill capacity, in which case the candidate would be hired at a lower level than the position level.
