The Ocean Engineering Research Centre (OERC) draws upon faculty expertise and its relationships with industry, other research institutes, and branches of government for the offshore, marine transportation, and fishing industries. In addition to faculty experience, the OERC operates a
58-metre long towing tank with wave generation capabilities.

Grands projets

Station Keeping in Ice – $8.5M project focusses on the development of a dynamic positioning control system for vessels in managed ice. Key research includes scale-model testing, modelling of loads on moored floating platforms
and dynamically positions platforms, and concept evaluation and downtime reduction tools.

SAFEGUARD – Passenger ship evacuation modelling using human performance data collected from sea trials Thermal Protection in LiferaftsAssess occupant heat balance and development of performance criteria

On the Move investigates employment-related geographical mobility and its consequences for workers, families, employers, communities, and governments.

SmartICE (Sea-ice Monitoring And Real-Time Information for Coastal Environments), is an integrated, near-realtime monitoring and dissemination system, used to inform decisions about coastal sea-ice travel and shipping, thereby improving safety. SmartICE is co-designed with
and involves Inuit in all its operations with the intention to integrate, not replace, Inuit Knowledge about sea-ice environments.


Trevor Bell, University Research Professor, Geography; United Nation’s Climate Solutions Awardee; two-time recipient of the Arctic Inspiration Prize: Dr. Bell is a multidisciplinary geographer whose novel and innovative research on climate variability and change in the coastal Arctic has had significant scholarly, community and policy impacts. He has developed SmartICE (Sea-ice Monitoring And Real-Time Information for Coastal Environments), an integrated, near-real time monitoring and dissemination system, to inform decisions about coastal sea-ice travel and shipping, thereby improving safety.

Chris Hearn, Director, Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS): CMC is Canada’s largest, most comprehensive and most advanced marine simulation centre designed to mitigate the risks associated with at-sea training. CMS’s areas of expertise include the modelling and simulation of harsh maritime environments, human performance in moving environments, simulation of offshore oil and gas operations, and operational risk analysis.

Claude Daley, Professor, Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering; fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering: Dr. Daley has made major contributions to the fields of Arctic ship dynamics, effects of ice and waves on ship design, and collisions between marine ice and steel structures. He led the development of international Polar Rules which became a global standard for Arctic ice class ship design.
