For more than 60 years, University Affairs/Affaires universitaires has delivered news and feature stories, opinion pieces and career advice uniquely focused on Canada’s university community. Published by Universities Canada, our independent journalism is produced in both English and French and goes beyond the day’s headlines to put events into context and provide in-depth analysis. Faculty, administrators and staff, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students turn to us as a trusted source of information that reflects their professional needs and interests, as well as for the most comprehensive listing of academic job postings in the country.

As Deputy Editor, you will play a central role in managing the digital and print editorial workflow process through its various stages of development through to publication. This includes creating the editorial flat plan, monitoring article submission deadlines, overseeing editing, translation, copyediting, fact-checking and proofing process; co-ordinating with teams to create production calendars and ensuring final files are on schedule for publication.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of UA’s multimedia content strategy.
  • Ensure all platforms align with the editorial mission and reflect the University Affairs brand.
  • Manage the delivery of specific content sections for the website and the magazine.
  • Solicit story ideas and original content from the university community; assign and edit stories from freelance contributors.
  • Serve as the Editor’s proxy and acts as the UA representative at conferences and events as required.
  • Identify new opportunities to advance Universities Affairs strategic goals.

The ideal person for this role will possess:

  • An undergraduate degree in journalism or a related field.
  • Four years progressive experience, with at least two years’ experience as an editor of a print or digital magazine, or in a comparable multi-platform publishing setting.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Thorough understanding of the production process for print magazines and digital content.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to supervise a team within a highly collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of WordPress, Office 365 apps, Adobe Acrobat and InCopy.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian university sector is an asset.
  • Fluency in reading and speaking French preferred; ability to write or edit in French is an asset.

The position is based in Ottawa. Universities Canada has adopted a hybrid work model where employees are expected to work in the office a minimum of two days per week. 

The salary range for this position starts at $90,422 depending on experience. Candidates who do not meet all of the position requirements may be considered in an underfill capacity, in which case the candidate would be hired at a lower level than the position level.
